Patricio Guzmán est né en 1941 à Santiago du Chili.
Il a fait ses études  à l’Ecole Officielle de l’Art Cinémathographique à Madrid (1966-1969).
 
Entre 1973 et 1979, il a produit et réalisé “LA BATAILLE DU CHILI”, avec la contribution de Chris Marker et l’Institut de Cinéma Cubain (ICAIC). “LA BATAILLE DU CHILI” est une trilogie de cinq heures sur la période finale du gouvernement de Salvador Allende.
Le film a remporté six grands prix en Europe et en Amérique Latine.
Il a été distribué en salles dans 35 pays.
La revue new-yorkaise “Cinéaste” l’a nominé comme étant “l’un des dix meilleurs films politiques du monde”.
 
En 1987, il a produit et réalisé “AU NOM DE DIEU”, (grand prix du Festival Dei Popoli, Florence, 1987) sur la lutte de l’Eglise Catholique en défense des droits de l’homme au Chili.
 
Entre 1990 et 1992, il a produit et réalisé “LA CROIX DU SUD”, (grand prix du Festival Vue sur les Docs, Marseille, 1992) sur la théologie de la libération et la réligiosité populaire en Amérique Latine.
 
En 1997, il a réalisé “CHILI, LA MÉMOIRE OBSTINÉE”, sur la mémoire historique de son pays (Golden Gate Award San Francisco, 1998 et 17 autres prix).
 
Entre 1998 et 2001, il coproduit et réalise “LE CAS PINOCHET”.         
 
Depuis 1997 il dirige le Festival International de Documentaire à Santiago du Chili.
 
Patricio Guzmán vit à Paris.
